SOLID
The SOLID(Social Linked Data) project is currently attracting attention in the trade press, not least because of the personality of its founder. None other than Sir Tim Berners-Lee - the 'inventor' of the World Wide Web - is leading the project in his position as professor at MIT. The core idea behind this approach is that users control their data in online storage entities called Personal Online Data Stores or Pods for short. Developers can build applications using an SDK to take advantage of the Pods.
The data formats are aimed at social services (including addresses, health, travel, messaging, feeds, comments) and the Cambridge Analytical scandal with Facebook data is considered to be the 'initial spark'.
2017 a startup called Inrupt built on top of the open source project SOLID was launched. Inrupt gives large organizations support, security and scale that these companies require.
The objectives of decentralizing the Internet and protecting privacy read similarly to UNITED-PAGES. The chances of success, on the other hand, are estimated to be rather low, as SOLID is diametrically opposed to the interests of Internet giants.
UNITED-PAGES takes a more 'realistic' approach. By using email addresses as the basis for addressing data, email providers are automatically 'invited on board'. For users, the address format known from email is an invaluable advantage in daily use. In addition, UNITED-PAGES is not limited to social-linked data and has unrivaled application possibilities.
